'sampling' transfers a portion of the royalties to the artist sampled. What proportion depends on who it is. Don't ever sample the Rolling Stones - you lose 100% of all royalties on your track, and the money mostly doesn't even go to the band - it goes to a guy they split with in 1972, Allen Klein I think it is. Nasty.
