The problem isn't with ripping (which is protected under home archival case law), it's with republishing, for free or not. Unauthorized republishing deprives the author of control of their own creative work, as well as potential income from it. As a creator of comic strips, you must know this, duh!

Scott Adams suggested (via Dilbert) that engineers should be paid on an internet tips basis if they want to contribute to piracy; the shoe doesn't feel so good when it's on the other foot.
