On the Eastside (east of Seattle) there is apparently one Chinese place for every three Chinese people. Given the choice between Safeway's pseudo-Asian concoctions of sesame oil and gristle, and one of five restaurants scattered around the same area, mostly staffed by people from China, I'm putting my money on the stuff that wasn't sweating under a heat lamp.
I'm not a big fan of the order-by-pointing system where one cannot speak with the waiter. I did that once, in a Thai place, and received a bowl of shrimp soup so blisteringly cayenne-laden that I - a right old chili-head with a strange attraction to specialty habanero sauces - couldn't eat it. But still, if I at least know what might be in it, it's more enjoyable than anything from a bin. |
