When my other UFie friend here (in perpetual lurk mode) and I built systems for our "deprived" friends, they quickly caught on to how cool it was to be able to surf the 'net and do homework, etc. on the things. Within a year of receiving our Frankensystems, they had gone on to replace their starters with current technology. It all depends on the person. If someone decides that he or she knows enough to get by and doesn't want to bother acquiring more skills, they'll never need to upgrade. I think those kind of people are shortsighted. Unless you plan to be dead in the next five years, you need some serious computer skills to survive.
One woman I work with has ZERO interest in learning anything new. Invariably, when I open a file she's "worked on", it's a mess I have to spend time on cleaning up. I feel like smacking her. It would take her 15 minutes to learn something that would save me hours and hours of cleaning up the gazillion instances of her screwing up. It torques my gears royally when someone uses a bunch of tabs in a document to line up text when they could use the formatting feature to make a hanging indent. Yeah, it's that stupid. |
