If this is a console app, print copious debug messages to standard error; if it's a GUI, call ShowMessage() (or your language's equivalent; the generic pop-up message with only an OK button, anyway) copiously. I find that's the best way to catch hard-to-trace errors, as long as you run it on a small enough data set that you don't get too many messages.

If you can't find it like that, put some debug output in things that call SetNthValue(), and work back to where it's coming from like that.
