Five Billion Vodka Bottles to the Moon by mikosullivan 2006-11-19 12:55:59
I'd like to recommend to all UFie's a book I just finished, Five Billion Vodka Bottles to the Moon: Tales of a Soviet Scientist, by Iosif Shkolovsky. Shkolovsky was a great Soviet Astronomer and occasional cohort of Carl Sagan. Fans of Richard Feynman will appreciate this collection of anectdotes from a long life of science and authority-tweaking.

My favorite story is taken from his days as a graduate student in WW II in which he and other grad students were conscripted into service digging ditches and generally engaging in the miserable but brave life led by most soviets of that time. I won't give away the great revelation from that chapter (I want you to be as surprised as I was) but it's really a zinger from out of the blue.
