The way I heard the story, the PC still exists as a platform because it was modularized rather than integrated. This way, you could just go adding things like expanded memory, graphic cards, etc. to a system whose designers would never have dreamed of a 2002 PC.

Now the question is: Is this good? Or would we all be better off with each manufacturer offering only three or four different models of highly integrated computer? (This isn't meant as a provocative question, I honestly can't tell.)
