Honestly, we're in a dry spell of innovation, mostly because of the market more than anything imho. But the only question is: Innovation? How? Why? Where? GUI has taken us far, and so has CLI in UI. What's next? Speech commands?

For that matter, hardware. How can you get around the electrical components that make up our system of computing? There was once I read about ternary (that's right -- base 3) computing, and also not to spread out the processor's logic horizontally along the silicon, but to build also veritcally. (Think skyscraper instead of urban sprawl.) Though one thing -- cooling?

*shrugs* not too easy atm to do innovations in computing, especially when it comes to clock rate and overall performance. We haven't seen much of a major innovation in CPU design imho since RISC vs CISC.
