It's nothing about the rainbow, the question is actually what colors we, the humans, have chosen to find different enough to give seperate names. Yes, you can do anything from color-blindness (where all colors are considered tints of a single color) to millions of barely-distinguishable colors. However, the rule commonly taught is Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Even the Indigo isn't really necessary (it's dark blue), but it's there so the acronym will be the easily memorisable Roy G. Biv.
