I would contest that extemely strongly, in fact. Foolproof is the only way to go. Once it is foolproof, the final step of total reliability is not far away. So much for an ideal world. However, in this decidedly flaky world we live in, any idiot programmer who fails to code defensively when dealing with any I/O operation is a fool, and deserves the scorn of all real programmers.
