the character development. In Saving Private Ryan, you got to know the characters, and you cared what happened to them. There is a sort of comraderie(sp?) that develops between you and the characters on screen. Without that, a war movie is just a bunch of people getting shot and blown up, or in other words, becomes just another action movie.
