Debian's great, as long as you want to learn a bit about Linux while installing.

It does make setting up XFree86 (the GUI) harder than it needs to be, and some other bits of the initial install can be a pain, but once a Debian box is running, it tends to stay that way. You get prepackaged versions of a huge amount of software, apt/dpkg is great, and as with any distro, if it's not packaged yet, there's always the option of a source install into /usr/local or /opt.
