That used to happen to me all the time when I was working as a bench tech for a major chain of retail computer stores that shall (ahem) remain nameless... I got so I would never give an inch of my time away for free without documenting exactly what I did, when I did it, etc because it would come back to bite us every single time when they got their first BSOD after bringing it in to add ram or something minor like that. Nevermind that they have less than 60% resources free because of all the stupid little desktop monkeys and talking parrots and other crapware bogging their machine down. It's somehow our fault because some idiot salesperson told them installing more ram would solve all of their problems and it didn't.
What made it worse was that the sales drones would always promise our work away for free in order to close the deal, and when we complained to the store's GM, he would always take the side of the salespeople and say it was in the interest of keeping the customer to do favors for them, installing stuff for free etc -- but then they would ALWAYS come back a week later and blame us for every problem their computer's ever had from day 1, as well as other household appliances on the fritz which were somehow our fault as well. Our boss didn't seem to 'get it' that doing favors for his customers was putting us into the line of fire for every technical problem they could possibly have, whether it was our fault originally or not.
Incidentally, this boss was also the one who would prance into our shop once a week and tell us that our department was the only one in the store that was losing money and that we'd better do something about it or we'd have to start looking for other jobs. I started looking for another job about the same time I stood up to him and told him that the reason our department was losing money was because we were doing so much free work for the sales floor and for crybaby customers who wanted us to fix their toaster because it stopped working about the same time they brought their computer in for a ram upgrade.
But I had the last laugh - hahahahaha - I'm now working for myself, setting my own hours, only taking service calls from customers who actually need my help instead of hustling dimes out of the bottom-feeders who shop at retail stores. I may not be making as much money but I'm proud to report that 100% of my customers are satisfied with the work I do and they all thank me whole-heartedly when I'm done instead of writing nasty letters. |
