I find that more and more I am tweaking software on my Red Hat system at compile time, but instead of just installing it with configure and make, I download the .srpm and edit the .spec file to fit my needs. That way, I can install the modified package easily on all of my machines, and can easily and reliably remove packages that I don't want anymore.

I like the happy medium :)
