It happens when you don't close a quote in a link. If you do it in a post, th Preview and Submit buttons disappear and you can correct it by copy and pasting the information into a new post. I'm not sure how you'd correct it in the Top Level content in your User Settings, since you can't save any changes any more. Seems like a bit of a bug to me - it appears you can permanently mess up your diary content. The best bet would be to e-mail Yohimbe and ask very nicely for the bug to be fixed, and to have the offending HTML removed from your diary content. :-)
