...You can use Maxtor's Maxllf.exe program found HERE.
It'll wipe partition table info, as well as all C/H/S and LBA info on the drive then rewrite the C/H/S info based on what you tell it is supposed to be there. It's therefore important to give it the right information or you could have a 8.4GB drive instead of a 40GB drive or even a drive that's not readable at all, so be sure you write down all info about the drive's existing parameters before you start.
I've also used it successfully on non-Maxtor brand drives, but every once in a while it'll see a particular drive and say This isn't a Maxtor drive etc etc but most of the time it works fine. YMMV.
Disclaimer:
Using a low-level format program on an IDE drive can seriously hose your drive if you give it the wrong information at the start of the program. If any of the settings don't seem to make sense or if you don't know what you're doing when you run the program, or even if you do, I'm not responsible if this program turns your hard drive into a doorstop. |
