Although I usually shutdown Microsquish systems "properly" when I'm done, I've gotten into dozens of situations when the box simply locks up: The keyboard and mouse both stop responding, except perhaps to chirp when used. That, or the infamous "blue screen of death." In these situations, all one *can* do is cycle the power.

I've also learned to sit and watch it shut down. All too often an individual task stops responding and that stupid "kill task/wait for it" box pops up, preventing the shutdown from proceeding.

OK, I'll admit it. Windows is great for reading e-mail and surfing the 'web. But when reliability is important, I'll take Unix every time.
