To start with by Migiizis 2002-03-05 12:13:05
My entire family and extended family.
Almost every tradional indian on this rez.
And yes, that is a couple thousand people.
I don't have an issue with naming a team indians
What I have an issue with is some drunk in face paint with foam or paper feathers on his head waving a foam tomahawk.
We have enough problems on the rez with low self esteem, and alcoholism without something like that plastered all over the place and some individual who doesn't live our ways saying we don't have a problem with it.
From an Anishnabe point of view, face paint is a very personal thing and is only put on when you are doing something shameful, like taking human life. Feathers, particularly Eagle Feathers are given to you as a gift when you do something that honors your nation, your family or your clan.
Weapons of war are never waved around in the air, the are taken very seriously and are always kept put away until there is no other choice.
Yes, "Chief Wahoo" hurts us. And until you've walked a rez striken with all the problems that we have, you will likely not understand why.
