Different people do things for different reasons.. by Capt. X 2002-02-14 22:32:37
There's doubtlessly any number of explanations for why people propose to others in big, flashy ways. Whatever they are, though, they seem (to me, anyway) to suggest a lack of respect to the intended fiancee.

By making a big public display of your proposal, you're putting the girl (or guy) on the spot. They can't just respond to you directly -- now there's an audience that wants to know whether the answer is yes or no. And if she/he does say no, that same audience is going to expect to hear an explanation why, even though it's none of their flipping business.

They call them personal relationships for a reason. Who wants to get involved with some showboating fool who's going to openly broadcast every private little detail for the approval of the crowd? There's enough invasion of privacy these days without shoving ourselves under the spotlight voluntarily.

Course... there's always those who are strangely impressed by those weird, overblown gestures, and that just happens to be what I'm counting on. C'mon, oh fantastic fantasy dream girl! You've gotta agree to marry me now! You'll be letting down the whole forum if you don't! (Maybe I'd better be a little more cautious here... I don't remember my dreams all that well, so for all I know, my dream girl could turn out to be Naruki. Spider sense tingling! Danger, Capt. Robinson, danger!)
