It's actually "romantic" in a geeky sort of way. /. is a well traffic'd site. The method of proposal here makes the woman feel special. How many other women will be proposed to on the front page of /.? Also, a key factor is that he's announcing to thousands of people that he loves this woman. (Which is even better than just telling her.)
It, of course, depends on the woman, if you're proposing to someone who doesn't read /., it won't work well. Anyways, the key (and the challenge, what geek can resist a challenge) is to make her feel special. (And I'm sure she is special to cmdrtaco.)
