1. The person to be considered for canonization must (usually) have lived a particularly virtuous and faithful life, bearing witness to Jesus Christ. Exceptions can be made; for example, some saints had a radical conversion, e.g., Paul, Mary Magdalene, or Augustine, while others were killed in odium fidei (martyred). If this can be demonstrated, he is declared venerable.
2. If one miracle can be attributed to the saint-candidate's intercession, he is declared blessed. If two can be attributed, he is declared a saint.
