VNC / SSH help by i_am_pi2002-02-14 07:42:09
The way I do port forwarding.... by rycompguy 2002-02-14 08:32:12
I usually connect to another machine on the network running an SSH server, and forward the port to the desired machine. I do this to administer an SQL server that is on an internal network and it works great.

Say you want to administer a machine called VNC1, if that machine has SSH server on it, from your local machine you would run:

ssh -L 5900:VNC1:5900 -g -N VNC1

This will forward the LOCAL port 5900 through the encrypted SSH session to the VNC1 machine. This will also encrypt your VNC connection, which is a good thing. To connect to the server, all you need to do is to use the VNC client to connect the local machine at port 5900 and ssh will tunnel that port to the web server.
