i remember my sensei once saying that the only reason someone would have him on the ground is because his opponent is trying to kill him. that, i guess, is why focus so much on taking the attacker down before he can take you down, or else i'm likely to gouge his eyes out or something equally unpleasant. so my sensei's philosophy seems to be contrary to your sensei's. ah well. it's all a matter of capitalizing on your own personal strengths anyhow.
