that's what my sensei has tried to do with grappling. We do weapon defenses and throws/takedowns/locks from punches and kicks. He focuses alot on grappling. He hasn't said so directly, but I think his philosophy is to get them on the ground where anyone but a wrestler is most vulnerable. He himself was not in any fighting occupation, but his best students are in the military, police force, or are bouncers.
