He's rokudan. Doesn't look all that ineffectual to me. Anyway, if someone really "tries some Aikido" on you and you're still standing, they were lying. You generally either fall down or throw yourself. If not, then something most likely goes SNAP. Believe me, you'd know if they did the techniques properly. And I know that at least some of the teachers here are not very good. I once went to a dojo where they wouldn't practice the techniques from both sides - only right handed! I'm pretty sure that wasn't the only one, either.
