I'm not saying Texas doesn't have it's bright spots... It's just that there's so much dead empty space between them. I mean, c'mon, where else in the world are you going to find road signs alerting you that there's a freakin' trashcan 45 miles ahead, just so the tourist commissions can claim that there's something to look at on the dirt and scrubbrush-intensive 3-4 hour long drives from city to city? I actually found myself missing the disgusting overproliferation of billboards you find on most American highways. At least then you'd have some sort of landmark to measure your progress against, instead of having to lean out the window and check the tires every few minutes to make sure you are, in fact, actually moving. I used to worry that if my dashboard gauges ever stuck so that they perpetually read constant speed and RPMs, the car could stall out and I'd never notice the difference. I'd just sit there in the middle of the road, possibly for days, grimly eyeing the road in hopes of catching a glimpse of one of those fabled Texas Trashcans, beacon of hope to the bored traveller that civilization does indeed exist somewhere down that long, lonesome stretch of highway. Lord only knows how many unfortunates die every year due to circumstances like that, but if you're interested, I could quickly fabricate a few statistics that could scare you so badly, you might even half believe them.
