For me, and most others, computers are just a tool. I don't need to know HOW it works, and I don't care. Most people use computers to help them accomplish a task or three, and the desire to learn isn't there, nor is it necessary to be able to use it.

But don't worry about the second part. I'll never voluntarily use Linux. ;)
