my aikido instructors weren't very good then... either that or my instructor was very very good. Everything that the Aikido people demonstrated on me was completely ineffective - they'd try a few throws and "redirections", which didn't work, and all the explanation they offered was "you're off balance, whether you believe it or not". Meanwhile, the few jujitsuish things I did seemed to be quite effective, considering the thumps on the mat.
