I bought a Canon printer that wouldn't print black ink. After a month and a half I gave up on customer support and took it back to the store. They replaced it with a slightly slower model.

Apparently Canon decided to stop making the others, and their statement was that the slower model was the exchangeable equivalent. It's not that much slower - 2 ppm slower than mine, which is 2 ppm slower than the next available model. But the next available model adds $50 to the price! So they refused to do anything other than the unfair swap.

I only mention this because it ticks me off, and because I'm surprised your customer was able to find the exact same model after several months. ;-)
