UK SubThread Spinoff Question by Naruki 2002-01-25 16:53:52
We had a nice little thread going the other day which started with some inane question about what to call Indians, but included a fairly sizable sub-thread about the United Kingdom.

It struck me this afternoon that I don't know what the proper terminology is. England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and that other gods-forsaken place are all countries, are they not?

But if those are the countries, then what is the proper term for United Kingdom (besides, duh, "kingdom")? Or is that the only proper term for it?

The US and Canada (and all those other countries with clear titles) are equivalent to England or the UK? How does this work?

This is not a question about who controls what, but about the proper terminology to use. If it's necessary to discuss the general politics in order to give an answer, then so be it. But otherwise let's stick to definitions, please. No need to start another funfest so soon.
