A band you might dig (even though I don't know what "mellow desert metal" is), is "Sunny Day Real Estate". I'm not going to say anything about the type of music they play (and it's not 40's jazz), or where they're from, or anything else. (I don't want to bias you.) Give them a listen. I think you might really like them. They have 4 albums out (5 if you consider a live album one), and all of them are great (in my opinion).
