When I entered the office I currently work in, I was shocked at the hostile unfriendliness I encountered among the other developers. With a staff of merely 15 or so they still managed to have several cliques. It seemed that one was not supposed to talk or share information with someone outside of their group.
Things have gotten marginally better as attrition breaks up the cliques, but the basic "intruder" mentality that I still sense after more than two years is ridiculous. How much worse is it then to deal with someone who does a different kind of job than yourself, but one whom you have to interact closely.
Developers, the more experienced the worse, are arrogant SOB's. The IT people I know are pretty good with their switches and routers and hubs, but they often miss out on some techniques because they don't think like a developer. The reverse is also true, though.
I suspect that most IT people have at least a grudging respect for developers. In this case, however, I find it frequently is not reciprocated. Developers generally have not-so-nice things to say about IT people. I'm probably biased myself, though. Having worked both sides of the fence, I tend to be more respectful. But even I sometimes gnash my teeth at the seemingly idiotic restrictions placed on my computer.
Trying to reign in my dissertation a little, I think that human nature is more at fault than chosen profession. When the professions are at odds and egos are involved, the problems are exacerbated. |
