While there is the truth in your statements there is also a sad reality that goes along with it.
I have been working in the IT industry for 22+ years...government, carriers, IBM, contractor, major publishing house, major finacial houses...and the one thing I have noticed in all these years is that Internal IT is always hamstrung by the corporate bottom line and IT is seen as nothing more than a black hole that money goes into but no profit is realized from.
I do realize that my last statement is not true, there are many cases where it can be shown that IT saves BIG money and really impacts the bottom line. What I am stating is the feeling and opinions that I have been given by management time after time.
It really isn't fair, we try our hardest to server the customer, management tries their hardest to make sure companies stay profitable. Of course there are exceptions to everything and I don't need to expound on them, slamlander has given accurate accounts of them.
We do our best with what we get. We would all love to do more, at least I know the people I work with do. Unfortunately we have to follow the corporate policy if we wish to keep a roof over our heads. Trust me, I have been well beaten up by management for trying to deliver what the customer really needed instead of the "standard" support. |
