Yep- they were both part of a writers club called "the Inklings" which read portions of their works out loud while they were still being written. Tolkien finished his LOTR series partly due to the support of his friends there. Also, I have heard that Tolkien was instrumental in leading Lewis to Christianity, without which, we never would have gotten most of Lewis's works, including the famous Narnia series.
