I can haul my own garbage to the dump, and do most of my own tech support.
Yes, I know the garbage collectors would be missed first, as would most basic service workers. I also feel they are usually underpaid, although if they have a union, I think most end up overpaid.
I was watching news about a nurse's strike in Portland. The nurses were offered a 6.5% increase the first year, and about 4% the second,(I think) and some of their insurance paid.
They wanted 9.5% increase each year for two years, and all their insurance paid.
The reason for the strike (as I see it) is because they have such lousy working conditions. They are understaffed, and have to work mandatory overtime, often without notice.
Rather than make what seem to me to be unreasonable salary demands, they should ask to improve the working conditions and staff so they don't have the mandatory overtime, and they would be better off.
I haven't received an increase above about 3% in years, except through promotions. The idea of getting a (better than)20% increase in salary is mind boggling to me. Makes me want to join a union. Hah.
Of course, the idea of having a wage where it is even possible to get a $10 an hour reduction in pay and still be above minimum wage is outside my realm of experience too, so what do I know, eh? (Separate issue I heard about on another board.) |
