and some treat them with an attitude worse than housewifes...
I was a housewife in traditional sense, then also in the sense of working outside the home + inside... Here though they often refer to us as "homemakers" now...<shrug>
In my case right now I'm listed as being perminanty disabled so "retired" or "on perminant disability." However I care for my multiply handicaped son alone(pretty much always have even when I was with my ex). Which means I give him speech therapy, etc at home.(I've had some parental training courses that trained me to do my own speech therapy, etc). I also deal with my daughters things when she's here or in the hospital and I'm there.(I've had 3 types of first aide training and training in some other proceedures she's required). I've worked as an advocate for myself and my kids. As a resource and advocate for others that are either disabled themselves or who have family members that are. I also cook, clean, shop, etc... the usual household tasks here.(no I don't get daycare or a homecare worker, or anything like that... even if I'm barely able to move if I'm having a bad day I still have to get stuff done as you can't put life on hold, etc.).
My benifits I get via BC Benifits Act.(it has a subsection for those on temp and perminant disabilty). Which is basically a welfare act. I don't qualify for CPP as i didn't work long enough after graduation etc.(it was hard to get a job where I was in those days... especially entry level for certain feilds). That we are covered under the act is great but it doesn't allow for inflation... and public opinon sometimes still isn't the greatest... people on DBII aren't "welfare bums". Also some workers need an attitude adjustment for just that reason.(mine got one that came from the minister themselves at the time when I delt with them...). Many DBII people would work if they could but we are to physically ill, etc to work. Its not easy to get on it. Two docs had to do my forms.. and multiple tests, etc showed I had more than 5 things. But that 5 of those things on their own was on a gov list that by itself would of qualified me. Anyways people on DBII should be under MCF(ministry for children and families ... the disabilty services to adults. *not* welfare... several of us are people with developmental disabilities that are simply through the "welfare" office as our IQ's are above 70.<sigh>) Also many adults with disabilities do advocacy, civil rights stuff, etc.
I guess I'm trying to say add in single parents, perminantly disabled(and unable to work outside the home), and househusbands to that. Because they don't get the recognition, etc they deserve either. |
