The gifts given to the walkers were important--especially those given to Gimli Gloin's Son and Samwise Gamgee. I think the gifting should have been kept.
I did not, by the way, feel the awe and wonder that I found in Lothlorien in the book. Other than that I have a few quibbles as most of you do, and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as most of you did.
I missed the prophecies--if they were in the movie they went by me--that were such powerful elements in th e book:
"Seek for the sword . . . ," "All that is gold . . . ."
And, of course, the blessing for Gimli, unlike any given to a Dwarf before " . . . and over you gold shall have no dominion."
If you, hypothetical reader, have not read the book, find a copy and look them up; it's worth it.
One last item: what happened to the reforging? Narsil is no more; Anduril goes to war.
