I loved the movie and explained it this way. The director was in quite the spot. To purists he could not do the work justice in 3 hours. To the layman, he took so long to tell a story. If you are ever in my neck of the woods (S.E Wisconsin), look up the Jesuit university, and give them a call. You won't be able to put your hands on the original leaf anymore but you can look at the microfilms of the Hobbit, L.O.T.R., maps, bits of the Silmarillian, and many other things Tolkien. My hat is off to the film and the director for putting before my eyes what happened in my mind's eye beginning many decades ago and continuing today.
