You're absolutely right about that- I (LOTR fan, but due to school load, unable to re-read books for about a year before the movie) went with my college roommate (LOTR fan, but not overly familiar with the books) and my mom (never read the books).
I and my roommie loved it, I kept filling in gaps in my mind, and my overall response was "Well, they messed up on a lot of stuff, but overall it FELT right" while Mom is STILL going "Huh?"
She'll have to read the books before she understands, I think.
On the other hand, my 10 year old brother (who read the books and has been anxiously awaiting the movie) is not going to get to see the movie on the big screen, because it would most certainly give him nightmares. (Cave troll stalking Frodo made even ME jump, and I *knew* he was going to come around that pillar!) |
