REVIEW: Lord of the Rings by Illiad2006-11-19 12:55:59
  Same feeling, w/ solution by si_druid 2001-12-25 07:32:22
I foolishly re-read the book in the days leading up to the movie and felt exactly as you did, Illiad. My chief problem was shifts in motivations and inclinations. For example, no-one wants to go to moria, least of all Gimli; and Saruman wasn't so direct about his allegiances. In all, i found it hard to watch the movie because I was constantly trying to sync it up with the book. Three hours later, i had enjoyed the scenery and imagery, but was left dissatisfied.
So i went back. Now i knew the "new" story and could actually watch it with a more open mind. Aside from revelling again in the backdrops, i was able to enjoy the plot, too. Things that seemed to be overdone the first time around (Bilbo's teeth in rivendell, the wizard battle) were much more agreable once i knew the deviations were there. It's hard to move from one medium to another with no changes or cuts, but this was one of the best i've ever seen (tho i still miss ol Tom Bombadil).

ps. spotted an filming error in the movie: Gandalf and saruman chatting, gandalf's staff strap is around one finger, cut to saruman, cut back to gandalf - it's in a different position: completely on his wrist.
pss (from Gorbon4): How does the g-man get his staff back?
