Much as I liked most of the film, I can't help thinking that they rushed the start. Gamdalf is supposed to say something along the lines of: "There's probably no rush, but if we reach your next birthday and I'm not here, head off with some trustworthy friends under this excuse". It would have been beter to keep that, and have the whole thing with Fatty Bolger delaying the Wraiths...

The big good thing I saw was the 3D animation, though. Finally someone has the sense to keep all the CG models (except for the troll, who was a bit of a screwup) behind deep layers of shadow or smoke, so that they looked real. If you consider 20 ft tall demons to be realistic. It was also smart that they used miniature scenery for the flyby effeects, rather than trying to CG. It's a shame about the wobbly troll. I just got flashbacks to "Walking with dinosaurs".

I thought that the scene with Gandalf and Saruman should have been missed. I can understand that they needed that for the special efects, etc, but itwould have added to the feel of the thing for the audience when the hobbits arrive in Bree expecting to meet him. If you see what I mean.
Also, wasn't wormtongue supposed to be around already? I liked him...
