I admit, I went into the movie wondering how they could possibly do justice to Tolkien's book, but I was plesantly surprized. I'm a hard core fan, (we learned to write notes in dwarven runes in the 70's), and I agree the casting and scenery were fabulous.
The part that I did miss was more about Tolkien's style of story telling compared to the director/writer's style. Tolkien let you get to know the charactors a bit better before you ran off adventuring with them, and he always let the reader relax after the scary parts... (like a rest in Tom Bombadil's home, I so wanted to see him...)
I think they did as good a job with this movie as is humanly possible. No, it doesn't have every detail from the books, but there's no way to get everything into 9 hours of film. And there's no need to try; I can always reread the books.
Oh, and I suspect the actress who played Galadriel hadn't read the books before taking on the part. In an interview, she said she thought Galadriel should have a bit of a dangerous edge to her. I always thought she was someone who met danger unwaiveringly... with noble grace, not 'edgyness.' |
