People who spill drinks... by saxguy 2001-11-29 13:02:53
...should not be allowed to own laptops.

I've got a client's Toshiba right here on my bench which is a prime example. Although Toshibas are built relatively smartly (with 2 layers of plastic and a layer of metal in between the keyboard and all other essentials) somehow, whatever this joker spilled managed to follow known physical laws and seep through cracks in a downward direction and now there's brown sticky stuff all over the logic board. Preliminary scientific testing reveals it to be a cola-based substance.

Being paid to repair it isn't necessarily a bad thing - the gross-out factor of wiping up someone else's schwag is only about a 5 on my scale; where the problem comes in is that the salespeople took the liberty of quoting him the price for a new keyboard (around $50+labor) which he agreed to; now I'm the one who gets to call him and tell him that he needs a $650 part plus additional labor to disassemble the entire laptop instead of just popping a new keyboard in. Of course he's not going to want to go for it -- which means I'm going to be stuck with a dead laptop and no money -- and not even any usable parts to rip from it because they're all coated with brown goo.
