Question for you all: Firewire Implementation? by ouaff2001-11-25 00:02:29
Sony didn't omit, just created second connector by Anonymous Freak 2001-11-26 09:20:36
Desktop Sonys have the 6-pin "Firewire" compatible interface that includes the power pin, it's just their notebooks use the 4-pin 'camcorder-style' interface that doesn't have the power pin. If you want to use a firewire peripheral on a Sony, just look for one that includes both the Firewire and i.Link logos (most do nowadays) or make sure you get one with external power. Of course, if you're using a desktop Sony, it doesn't matter. I'd stay with an IEEE-1394 card made by the company that manufactuers the chip, but that's just my opinion. Or, you can get the new Sound Blaster Audigy, which has IEEE-1394 onboard, and Creative is making a big push to standardize 1394 under their banner. (Even Sony has signed on to use Creative's 'SB1394 certification'...)
