But she is probably only expressing her love for you.
She thinking on some rather old fashioned lines, where the greatest possible pinnacle of success a woman could achieve was marriage with a man who is a good provider and to have his children. And she also obviously thinks that an empty air-head with good looks, probably has a better chance of achieving it. So she thinks that both by getting educated and having such an un-feminine pastime you are lowering your worth on the marriage market. And you are wasting your precious youth on this as well. Her attitude to your SO comes from the same line of reasoning: He should be treating you to show what an excellent provider he would make. As he is not, then he is a looser who will not be able to provide for you and your children. As to your clothes, well, back to argument #1 you will not snare you a decent man if you do not dress fashionably.
