Here's a trick my room mate showed me when he was proving how easily he could get root on my system... :-)

At the lilo prompt, type
linux init=/bin/sh
Voila, a root prompt. Type passwd to set the password. These instructions assume that in /etc/lilo.conf, the linux image is called "linux" - otherwise, change what you type at the lilo prompt accordingly.

Hope that helps... I'm no expert on Linux so no flames please if I've missed out a step or seven... :-)
