then your analysis is accurate. What's done is done, and nothing can change that; I could argue that the blame is anyone's... even Bill Gates if you like, but that won't help matters much now. I'm doing my best to keep my comments from being personal because I enjoy the e-company of xcheopis, yourself, and Naruki.
I do agree that it's important for other posters to be made aware of where the personal attack line is drawn. However, my opinion is that convincing the general public that a particular poster has been bad is not usually the best way to do this. It has unfortunate side effects because it can make offenders more defensive (thus causing more problems) and also skews the public's opinions of future posts by an offender, even if s/he apologizes/repents/whatever (ie. it can set up a tendency to take the worst possible meaning of a post, or to not give any benefit of the doubt). My opinion is that, if it's at all possible, resolving specific issues privately and finding some other way to express the general idea that personal attacks are not welcome is a better solution.
But, this is a public board, so who am I to say how others should resolve their problems? :)

Are you kidding? It takes a lot more than sour grapes on a public board to ruin my day. In fact, very little on this board has ever touched me enough to effect my day negatively. There have only been a few times when that's happened, such as finding out about the UF layoffs, and reading about how Sept. 11 affected some of our dear UFies. Compared to those things, most of the rest seems like small potatoes (especially since so much is just jest).
However, I do appreciate your gesture. I hope your day hasn't been messed up too badly. :) |
