Woman called to get her dial up set up. Someone had given her a computer.
After 10 minutes we had My Computer open, and were making our way to DUN. She wasn't sitting at the keyboard, and the person who was wouldn't speak with me. (???)
She had already set a dun up, apparently, so I checked settings. This only took another ten minutes.
All the time I am walking her through these things, she fails to give me feedback, so I end up with these pauses of dead air.
"Have you clicked "OK"?
Yes
"Is it open?"
Yes
"Ok..Now I want you to..."
After creating a shortcut, I asked her to click on it to enter her username and password. She can't see it because My Computer is still open. I spend another ten minutes walking her through how to close a window. I notice she still has the error message from before up, and it says her modem isn't connected properly.
Ok, so we go to the Control panel and open modem props only to find she has a Standard 300 bps modem. Yes, you guessed it. She doesn't have a modem installed on the machine at all. She just signed up for an account, and doesn't even have a modem.
Sighs.. One wonders sometimes if they will ever institute a test before allowing computer ownership. |
