I don't want to post too much info lest the people with whom I work might actually see this. Ok... Who am I kidding. I don't work with anyone intelligent enough to read UF!

The "powers that be" recently hired on an Jr. Accountant that wouldn't have enough work to be quite full time... so the fact that he had "extensive computer knowledge" worked well in his interview... the powers that be thinking that he could "help out" with IT. They didn't bother running his IT skills by anyone who had any IT skills.

The new accountant starts, I get him his username and password ("Why do we need all this security stuff?")... I grin and bear it. He sits down with his workstation, fires it up and says "Wow... Windows 2000. I'm running Windows 97 at home." First clue of accountants EXTENSIVE computer knowledge. So I "chat him up". He is a certified something... that involves an A+ certificate that he got in 91. He hasn't really worked on computers since then.

He prefers to do the books by hand, in a ledger. He didn't understand how you could "have more than one spreadsheet in a spreadsheet".... (i.e. - more than one workbook). He complains that it's cumbersome to use both accounting software and Excel because you have to close one to do the other. (That was one of the neat features(?) of newer versions of windows... those of us in the know call it multi-tasking).

He brought in some disk analysis software to try out on his workstation (remember, I had to give him *some* IT ability)... the software doesn't recognize anything newer than FAT. (i.e. - NTFS really didn't like it)... and after fixing(?) the drive, it didn't boot so well. It also gave some weird error about space not being reported correctly, because you can't have partitions over 2 gigs, right?

He gave me a rought time about his small hard drive... His at work is only a 30, but he's got a 700 at home... not quite understanding the subtle difference between megabytes and gigabytes...

Thank you "powers that be" for this help... I've never felt so secure in my job.
