Question of the Day! by kickstart2001-11-16 00:00:04
  Go by z1root 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Ez-Go, to be exact. I enjoy the game go, it uses a grid of 19x19, 13x13, or 9x9 interesections for a game that is described as "takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master." Go started many centuries ago in the Orient and has spread all over the world. Due to the games roots, Go players can be ranked in a similar fashion as martial artists. Although the game started with black and white stones on a wooden table, on the Internet you can now find go servers in just about any fashion and language; some have graphical Java interfaces, such as at Zone.MSN and Yahoo Games, while others have ASCII interfaces via telnet. There are even Go clients which will read the ASCII stream and translate it into a graphical interface on your *nix or winbloze box. I have found the Go community to be very open-source oriented; some places it feels almost like a community of *nix geeks, all sharing tips, code, resources, etc. Actually, the cyber-interfaces are generally very pro-open-source (other than the commercial sites such as MSN and Yahoo) and will give you server-stream specs and sample client source code so you can make your own client to share. All that combined with the deep mental challeng of the game make it seem to me like a perfect game for geeks.

Some of the resources I've found helpful are:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnugo/gnugo.html, http://www.goproblems.com/, and http://senseis.xmp.net/

Here is most of a message one Go player forwarded to me after the first time we played. I hope some of you find it fun.

There is plenty of parking (across the street, behind the garage on corner of Liverpool Road & Victoria St.) Remember to pick up an exit token at the front desk when you enter the club. The club is approximately 0.7 km walk from Ashfield Station. Just walk up Hercules St, turn left into Liverpool Road then keep walking (uphill). Visitors and beginners always welcome. First night is always free. Late breaking news: The CASS GO Club will be opening each Friday morningfrom 09:30 until 13:00, at The Av Youth Centre, 11 The Avenue, Hurstville. Admission $1-00 (bring your money with you!!!). First visit always free. Some parking. The site is "behind" the Westfield shopping centre, right beside the quick exit and the theatre parking access ramp. The Avenue is one-way traffic, so The Av will be on your right as you drive. Visitors and beginners always welcome.
